Chapter 14__________

“Excuse me, Miss, may we have a word with you?”

Bree looked over at the uniformed police officer who had spoken to her. He and his partner had been watching her as she pushed the shopping cart toward the store. A sick feeling pooled in her stomach; she had nothing to hide but in her experience when a cop approached someone it was usually not a good thing. She glanced at her two kids, Chloe in the seat of the cart and Jake at her side. “Um, sure.”

“We won’t take up much of your time.” The older man promised. He was taller and had a neatly trimmed bottle brush moustache. His partner was shorter, probably two decades younger, and had the mean look of a pit bull.

Bree plastered a faint smile on her face. Please don’t ask about Ryder. “What can I help you with?”

“You’re Aubrey Dalton, aren’t you?” The younger man asked sharply as he clicked his heels together like an eager pup. Those shoes looked obscenely expensive and very well polished. “You’re living with Wilbur Ryder III?”

The sick feeling intensified and Bree was glad she had the cart to hold onto for support. “I am.” She answered both questions in one.

“You’re aware of his involvement with the Northridge Disciples MC?” The older man asked.

“Yes.”

“Are you aware of any illegal activities that happen within the club?” The younger man questioned earning a stern look from his elder partner. The younger man had a slight lisp, she noticed.

Bree shook her head. “No, I’m not. They ride bikes, talk about bikes, fix bikes. They have a few businesses to finance their club. That’s about all I know about it.” She answered truthfully. She didn’t know much outside of that – except their war with the Reapers but the cops didn’t need to know that.

“You’ll have to pardon our intrusion on your private life, Miss Dalton.” The older man explained. He seemed much more calm then his partner. “But you should be aware that this particular club is closely monitored by the local and state police. They have been involved in some illegal activities over the years and frequently they find themselves involved in turf wars with other motorcycle clubs. It’s our duty to investigate anyone connected to Will Ryder and his club.”

Bree chose her words carefully, sounding a whole lot stronger then she felt. “Well, officers, I assure you I have nothing to hide. I lead a rather boring life. And whatever the club has done in the past I can’t imagine they’re up to anything now.” That was a lie. Bree had no idea what Ryder did when he was with his brother or when he was away from home. Most normal law abiding citizens did not stay out to the small hours of the night but Ryder did. In fact, the man hardly got any sleep at all. As much as she had not wanted to be involved in the motorcycle club she sure was covering their asses right now.
